more boat pics but aside from that your site was great

Pretty neat site. I've been working on the river for just over three
years, am 24 years old, and a deckineer. I hope to make an engineer
someday in the near future, and plan on retiring on the river. I don't
know exactly what it is, but something keps calling me back every trip,
it's that cool. John Esser of the Sternwatch website is a crewmember
on my boat. He has a good site also. Thanks.

Been a towboat Cap/pilot for 27 years and my company had a big lay off
August 1, 2001. It got me so I've enjoyed being home but still miss the
river. Have traveled the Tennessee River quite a bit. Guntersville
lost a good ole river man last week, Howard Powell died at the age of
77. He will be missed. Great web site.

I'm 25, been in industrial electricity for about 4 years now. I am also
in the national guard. I enjoy challenge -&- adventure. I am divorced. I
live in N.E. Tennessee. A friend of mine moved from here to
Missippi a few years ago and started working the barges. He came back
about a year ago and he started telling me about the river life.
Needless to say I became very interested. I got the number of the
company that he worked at and put in for a job. I have been trying to
find out more about the river boat life and found your web site. I am
very interested in working barges. If you have any advice or tips
please e-mail me. I would appreciate it very much.

Sammy Hull   17/Nov/2001:13:30:34
I'm a fleet mate on the upper Miss., been at it for 4 years now. I've
worked my tail off -&- continue to do so for Upper River Services. I
started in '98 on the Mary J,boy was I green, 6 months later "they"
made me a lead man on the Becky Sue. It goes to show that hard work -&-
being true to your, self can still pay off. The next year it was the
J.L. Flemming "a great M/V I might add" and now I'm back on the Becky
Sue.
This last spring I managed to go -&- break my wrist, by checking down
some barges into the fleet. 9 weeks later the cast FINALLY came off.
Man I missed every aspect of being back on "my" boat or any other for
that matter. My wrist still hurts after a good night of tow building or
splicing up a pile of scrap line, but it can't stop me from coming back
for more. This damned muddy ass river truely does get in your blood.
Some nights the rain comes down so hard you'de probably be less wet if
you jumped in.

Angie   24/Oct/2001:10:21:40
Just found your site and was thrilled to see the messages posted here.
My husband is a Towboat Captain and works the ICW in North Carolina.
He worked for Transload and Transport from 1978-1985 and moved to
Compass Marine in 1985, three months after we were married.

I had no idea 17 years ago of the unique lifestyle being the wife of a
towboater would entail! With marine radio in hand,(before cell phones)I
have driven beside the canals and sounds when he would pass by so we
could talk. Other times, I would walk up on bridges and toss a current
newspaper into a barge as it passed, or drive for two or three hours to
just be able to visit while he was taking on fuel. As a couple, we've
survived deaths in the family, tornado damage to our house, scheduling"
births of our children, and paying phone bills that should give us
stock in AT-&-T. But, as many times as I resent that "other love" (the
boat) in his life, I love him more than ever and we'll "keep on
tugging."

Have you eve

I LUV THE WATER it is the only place that sets you free.

Gary Harrison   19/Oct/2001:12:34:47
I just wanted to say thank you! Thank you for showing this unique and
exciting way of life that is much more than another way to earn a
paycheck. I worked on the lower mississippi for 3 years, mostly on the
M/V John H. MacMillan Jr. and it is something I will never forget. Take
Care, keep up the good site an Stay Safe

Nysa Woodall   18/Oct/2001:22:23:30
Very interesting site, my husband Mike Woodall has worked on the
river the whole 7 years we have been together. It has been hard to
schedule holidays, family events and even the birth of our two children
around the schedule of a river man, but he says he enjoys his job. In
1998 he attended the River School in Memphis TN and became a pilot, he
now works at Excell Marine in Paducah KY.
The life of a river man's wife is very lonely, but I guess that makes
you appreciate them even more. He gives up his time with us and in
exchange we have a very nice and comfortable life.
To my husband where ever you are tonight. "I love you and will keep
the light in my heart on for you, until you are safe in my arms again."

rick scott   16/Oct/2001:10:52:27

I recently retired from the Air Force and moved to Tennessee. I live
only a few hundred yards from the Cumberland River not too far from the
Obey River. Most of the old folks around here that once worked on the
river are now gone but I remember their stories growing up. An
intresting site and way of life.

This is a real good representation of life on the river. I first
worked on the river 8 years ago and worked for 3 years. I had a family
at home who didn't like me gone all the time so I left the river.
Well, until this year in Jan. I returned to the river. I like the
security of the river compared to working in the oilfield, enenthough
the money is less. Also, nothing can compare to drinking a cup of
morning coffee on the deck while under way. Well, besides getting off
your hitch and going home. Peace out and God Bless America

Caleb Albers   22/Sep/2001:18:27:23
This is an excellent account of life on the river! I, too, am a river
rat and think we need to have more web sites dedicated to this unique,
yet exciting way of life.

it.I would like to find pics of the vessel if possible.

Way back in 1953 I was just 16 years old and looking for an
adventure. I was living in Charleston Mo. which you all know is close
to the muddy Mississippi. Some buddies and I would hich hike to Cape
Giraideau and sit on the back and watch the tugs come in and get
supplies. This looked like some real fun working on the tug and going
up and down the Mississippi to all of those new places. Man I just have
to do this. When i got back home I talked a friend of mine whos father
was an engineer on a Simpson oil tug .WHAT LUCK!! Whith a real strok of
luck he got me my coast guard lic as a deck hand. And Simpson oil hired
me on as a DECK HAND. My life was complet now, what a job. So off I
went to Cape Giraideau to catch MY TUG. Well I have a LONG story about
my stint on the TUG as a DECK HAND. I can say this for sure--I GREW UP
REAL FAST-- let me tell you. I can honestly say this was one of my
biggest life experences. I learned at an early age what the real world
was all about and I am s

Bob Sarver   16/Jul/2001:15:55:39
My father was in his seventh issue of Master and Pilot's licenses. He
once worked for Sabine Towing. Maybe you or someone you know might
remembers him. His name was Paul B. Sarver, Sr. He was born in Orange,
Texas and mostly worked the Intercoastal Canal. He did run the
Mississippi River for several years too. If you or someone knows or
remembers him, please write me. I am to do a article on his life as a
tug boat captain and I could use any information I can find. You might
ask around the office too.

I once worked the tugs too, so I know your love for the job. It gets in
your blood and no other job can take it's place. That is why my father
was in his seventh issue (five years to a issue)of his licenses.

Peter   13/Jul/2001:11:30:59
Hi David, a great site indeed. I myself used to work on towboats on the
Danube river which is a magnificent river connecting eight countries of
central Europe. The life on the river was fantastic and browsing
through your site now brought back good memories of those years gone
by. All the best mate and keep the towboating spirit alive.

Bernard   13/Jul/2001:09:03:36

to visit my son in Gulfport. I have always been in awe of this mighty
river. Maybe one day I will get the oportunity to take a ride down or
up this great River. Better yet I would love to do some catfishing
along this river.

I really enjoyed viewing this websight.
Take care and the best of luck to you!

In the 70's I worked harbor tugs along pool 17 -&- 18 below/above
Muscatine, Iowa. From age 17 to 21. I moved barges out of the local
grain terminals to the line boats. It was hard work, you earn your
money as you know, those cables and wratchets were not lite! The
Mississippi River, a wonderful experience , the solitude,
peacefullness, and serenity.. Gee I hate getting old and living in the
city! A wonderful sight, I have shared it with many..

Bob   08/Jul/2001:11:22:04
David,
One thing that I believe should be mentioned on this site is the
importance of what tow boats and their loads play in this great nation
of ours. And therefore, the importance of those who choose to ride these
rivers. I'm no genius, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist or a
person with a masters degree in business from Harvard to realize it.
You have a wonderful site here. Thanks for letting me visit.

Karl Causey   07/Jul/2001:02:01:08
Hi David, My wife and I ate at the Ameristar casino tonight and as we
were walking to our car to go home we noticed a huge barge about to
pass under the bridge, something she has never seen before and we
stopped and watched untill it passed through and was out of sight (it
was dark) She asked me alot of questions about where the people on the
boat sleep and how many are on it and so forth. I really didn't know.
Ironically that was just a few hours ago and I was bored and searching
the net and just happened to come across your sight. She's asleep now
but I'm going to show it to her tomarrow and all the great photos you
have. I could use some of those breath taking views. Keep it up and
good luck!

My Great-grandfather was a steamboat mate back in the days before and
during the Civil War. His home was in Portsmouth, Ohio. His father was
a ship's carpenter, working on the construction of boats at Concord,
Lewis County, Kentucky. This great-great grandfather ended up in that
area after being discharged from the army in Chillicothe, Ohio, after
the end of the War of 1812.These men must have loved the river. I am
going to take a drive along the northern side of the river from
Cincinnatti to Marietta in early July. I would love to take a trip on
one of the barges someday. I am enjoying your site and photos.
Excellent.

This is GREAT! I wonder if you can find graduates of The National River
Academy, a private instutution that the Towboat -&- Barge industry once
supported. I was fortunate enough to be the Executive Director of the
this very effective institution from 1980 until it's closing. Looking

site going and keep her between the banks.

Great site! Cruising through yahoo looking for tankerman training for
our guys at Carotex, Inc. a shipyard in Port Arthur, TX and ran across
your site. Very nice! The Diamond S was our favorite customer and
friend. We still work with Kirby but it just isn't as personal.
Thanks

Howdy there,
You have a great site and would like for you to keep up the good work.
I have been a Captain on Towboats for 23 yrs now and have operated on
the Upper and Lower Mississippi, Arkansas, and the White River in
Arkansas. I specialize on the White River in Arkansas because we have
no aids to navigation. Nothing. We have to read the river like they did
back in the Mark Twain days of boating. Good luck on your ventures.

I deliver supplies to the ARTCO/ADM boats at St Louis and only can wish
I were younger, Single, And with out children. I once worked on
microwave towers all across the country where every day was an
adventure and something new. We did our job knowing that each day could
be our last, but the job had to be done. Best done by us young stupid
bucks and not family men. (My Words). I see these deckhands and mates
working the same kind of life - away from home for long periods ( If
there is a home ) I can not see where they are given the credit they
deserve. So here goes - You guys keep up the good work - you keep
America running While you do this job and we need people like you.
It's a rough job, but it pays good. Put something away for later if you
can. Enjoy the time off, Remember the stories and the men you have
met. I'd like to say Hi to a couple of river rats - Mike H. and Frank
R. - Two hardworking great guys. Have a safe trip wherever life may
take you !

You have a very nicely done website. It was really refreshing to run
into someone who is enthusiastic about working on the river. So many
of us out here seem to just dread the next trip. Hope to run into to
you somewhere down the line.

As a former towboatcrewmember on the river Rhine I enjoy your side very
much. I am very interested in the work on the Mississippi and Ohio river
and visited a few locks and dams.

Dave you sure sound like you enjoyrd your work. I am sure there were
plenty of times you woked your tail off but you enjoyed the river. The
cruise you took me on was awesome and I enjoyed every part of it. With
your enthusiasm I am sure you will do well, but I think the river will
be your first love.

hello, I just want to say that this site was one of the best ones I've
seen so far on the Mississippi River. Thank you very much and keep up
the good work. These pictures have been wonderful- upon seeing them I
finally understood why people seem to love the Mississippi so much.
